The journey to the world stage begins with the basics. The Hampton Downs New Zealand Racing Academy (HDNZRA) offers different instruction levels depending on the drivers’ skills. The higher the level, the more bespoke the package, with the emphasis on developing the talent of each driver at a pace they are comfortable with, while challenging them to stretch themselves.
We’ve built a range of packages tailored to accommodate every driver’s ability at an affordable price, and packed with value!
- Build your skillset with tuition from world-class instructors from all forms of motorsport and you can apply those fundamentals to any race car!
- Get behind the wheel while having one on one coaching from instructors in the passenger seat.
- Review data and video footage in between track sessions and discuss areas of improvement with your instructor.
- At levels one and two you have access to the Hampton Downs Club Circuit.
- At level three, training will be completed on the National Circuit.
The drivers will train and race in Toyota TR86 production cars and Toyota Racing Series single-seaters, both with dual controls to facilitate in-car coaching. Cars will be fitted with cameras and the latest software to provide detailed data analysis and video feedback that the drivers can take home with them.
When the drivers prove their skills, they can step it up into the Toyota Racing Series FT50 and hone their single-seater skills! The FT50 is a pure breed race car, Italian designed and built, this beast is one of the fastest cars lapping around NZ race circuits.

RACING ACADEMY
How many Academy programmes are there?
There are two. One for Toyota 86 saloon cars and one for TRS FT-50 single-seaters.
Who can participate?
Anyone who is interested in driving a race car can give it a go! From experienced campaigners that have competed in Toyota Series, V8s, GT to those transitioning from karting to cars or if you have a passion for motorsport and just want to get behind the wheel (no experience needed).
How many levels are there?
There are six levels of training available – three levels for Toyota 86 and three levels for TRS FT50. Each begins with tuition on the Club Circuit and progresses to the National Circuit. For experienced drivers who start on a higher level, you can start on the National Circuit. You can read more on what each level involves – click here.
Do I have to start at Level 1?
Level 1 is designed for drivers progressing from kart racing or who have never previously driven a race car on a circuit. Prerequisites for each level are outlined on the website. Skipping levels is at the discretion of Hampton Downs Academy.
What do I need to bring for the Academy?
If you have your own race gear, bring all your racing attire – helmet, boots, gloves etc. However if you don’t have your own, Hampton Downs Academy can provide you with all the gear you need.
How many times can I attend the Academy?
You can attend the academy as many times as you like! Improve your skills and experience by progressing through the levels or repeat a level to refine your skills.
Who do you contact for the Academy?
Your first step is to go to the Contact Us page on the Hampton Downs website and complete the form.
Does the Academy still go ahead in the rain?
Yes it does. If Hampton Downs deem the track to be too wet or dangerous, we will not go ahead.
Do I get new tyres?
Your car will be equipped with good quality tyres however, particularly in TRS FT50, you can choose to purchase your own new set of tyres.
